IKEA’s “Better Shelter” Named Design of the Year

The winner of the 2016 Beazley Design of the Year award is the Better Shelter. Designed by John Karlsson, Dennis Kanter, Christian Gustafsson, John van Leer, Tim de Haas and Nicolo Barlera, in conjunction with the IKEA Foundation and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the flat-pack shelter aims to help people displaced by armed conflict or natural disaster.

Outfitted with ventilation, solar panels, LED lights and mobile chargers, the entire structure takes just a few hours to assemble! Watch a start-to-finish demo in the short time-lapse video above. You can also check out more images below or on display at London’s Design Museum until Feb. 17th.
