They wanted to schedule a campaign, but there were multiple scheduling conflicts. So the officer simply ordered the players to attend. Now playing Dungeons & Dragons wasn’t simply an opportunity for them; it was a requirement under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
