Drawn to forms and unexpected juxtapositions he found in nature, Alexander Calder created abstract compositions that activated the surrounding space, as seen with “Red Lily Pads.” Calder also had a degree in engineering and made innovative sculptures in which balanced forms move in ways that often depend on air currents.
