Institute of American Indian Arts MFA Focuses on Indigenous Arts Production

The new MFA in Studio Arts program at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico is a low-residency graduate program that is mindful of students’ needs to maintain relationships with their home communities while developing their professional arts practice. The program’s core pedagogical approach is based on nurturing mentorships with renowned master artists.

Since its inception sixty years ago, IAIA has been dedicated to the study and advancement of Native arts and cultures, and is deeply committed to student achievement and the preservation and progress of Native communities. The launch of this new program furthers IAIA’s mission and reach by providing artists with an Indigenous-focused education that fosters the importance of lifelong learning and outreach.

The program’s curriculum is based on Indigenous knowledge and directly engages the complex histories and challenges of our time. It delivers a world-class contemporary arts education and empowers its students to give voice to a broad spectrum of Indigenous experiences. IAIA’s MFA program offers the opportunity for artists to remain committed to community while gaining an understanding of, and contributing to, emerging discourses of contemporary art production.
