Interview: Artist Designs Custom Floral Crowns for Beautiful Pet Portraits

Flower Crown Pet Accessories by Freya’s Floral Company

The boho flower crown has seen a revival over the past few years, with many brides, festival goers, and vintage fashionistas opting to top their heads with nature-inspired accessories. But it’s not just people that get to celebrate ‘70s summer style—your pets can too! Californian creative Yarely (of Freya’s Floral Company) designs custom-made flower crowns for dogs and cats, transforming her fluffy models from household pets into majestic forest queens and kings.

Yarely made her first floral headdress for her own dog—a beautiful Australian shepherd named Freya—as a fun prop for an Instagram photoshoot. The response was so positive that she decided to turn the simple idea into a business, and now she makes floral pet accessories for pups and kitties all over the country.

Each unique piece is creatively constructed using artificial flowers selected according to Yarely’s chosen color palette. Her floral hues are often inspired by the places she visits, architecture, and art, but they also often match the fur and eye colors of each furry client. The colorful arrangements always bring out the natural beauty of the pets that wear them—one particularly pretty model is Leo the Insta-famous cat, who majestically shows off Yarely’s collection in countless close-ups.

You can order your own custom pet crown on Yarely’s website. And if you want to find out more about her inspiration and process, read on for My Modern Met’s exclusive interview with the designer.

Flower Crown Pet Accessories by Freya’s Floral CompanyWhen did you first begin making animal crowns?

I first made my Australian shepherd, Freya, an Instagram account in the Spring of 2017. After photographing her with my very limited photography skills I was interested in making her a boho prop to challenge myself creatively. It was just for a fun and in all honesty, my first few crowns were a little rough. I had no DIY experience and was winging it. Since it was just for my pup, the craftsmanship did not matter, but it does now. After receiving so much positive feedback I decided to grow my love of flower crowns into a business. Now I dedicate time and energy into each unique piece.

I like to joke around and call her my quality assurance officer. Every new design is tested on her to ensure that the piece will be able to withstand a dog’s energy. Aside from testing new products, Freya is also my main model. She poses beautifully! She will be the star of a small “how-to” video I am working on.

I first focus on the colors I want to work with. I take palette inspiration from many (non-floral) places, like the fashion and art world. I traveled to Mexico recently and since I am a Chicana, visiting Mexico always fills me with creative inspiration. While I was there, I was enamored with the vibrant color combinations of the architecture. When I returned and began creating crowns, I kept in mind those color combinations and looked back at photographs to channel that energy. This resulted in more vibrant pieces. In terms of material, I am meticulous with the items I work with. Yes, they are mostly plastic, but there are different levels of quality even within the world of artificial flowers. The entire process contains a lot of trial and error, but I love experimenting and growing.

Cats can be especially independent, yet Leo the cat seems to be a beautiful model! Do you have any tips for getting cats to pose in your crowns?

Leo’s owner, Jane (@leo.mainecoon), is a social media friend that supports and promotes my business. In terms of tips, I recommend bribery for both cats and dogs! There is nothing like getting that fixed gaze on a treat. Freya will tolerate any crown on her head for treats. I also recommend training your pet. Teach them to feel comfortable with a crown before going out for a photoshoot. Patience is key and have fun playing around!
