But despite the fact that communication is easier and faster, the actual human connection or bond to one another seems not to be. Our needs for friendship and companionship are not met. Hence, the loneliness epidemic we have today.

Can the solution for this problem be hiring someone to be your friends?. This “rent-a-friend” system is well established in Japan. Their rental service has been available for more than two decades now.

The size of this industry and its consumer appeal didn’t go unnoticed here. When entrepreneur Scott Rosenbaum stumbled across its existence in an article, he thought, “If people in Japan were interested in hiring rentable parents, would people in the US be interested in hiring rentable friends?”
