Jamaican Locals Star in Dev Hynes and Bryndon Cook's New Music Video

The stars of a new music video for VeilHymn, the collaborative project between Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange, and Bryndon Cook of Starchild, are the locals of Kingston, Jamaica. The new video for HYMN was directed by Malia James and choreographed by Juri Onuki, who frequently collaborates with Hynes. Over a period of two days, James and Onuki traveled around Kingston shooting a series of beautifully constructed visuals for the new single. A string of video portraits peer into the lives of different characters throughout the city as they sing and dance to the infectious funky soul jam.

According to Rolling Stone, the video drew inspiration from photographer Malick Sidibé‘s black-and-white documentation of pop culture in Bamako, Mali during the sixties. “I’ve always been a massive fan of Malick Sidibé’s work and have wanted to pay tribute to him since his passing last year,” James tells Rolling Stone. “Taking Dev and Bryndon’s ideas and merging my love of Sidibe, I wanted to explore the concept of creating a fictional, vintage time and place similar to the confident and carefree spirits that Sidibé has documented.” Hynes and Cook have worked together on and off since 2011. HYMN marks the duo’s first formal release as a group. Check out the video in full below:
