Nuyorican artist Juan Sánchez’s multimedia practice explores issues of race, class, cultural identity, equality, and self-determination. Maintaining an activist stance for over 45 years, he establishes his art as an arena of creative and political inquiry and reflection that encompasses the individual, family, the communities with which he engages, and the world at large. While Sánchez first gained recognition for his multilayered mixed media collage paintings addressing issues of Puerto Rican identity and the struggle against colonialism, his recent work embraces photography, printmaking, and video installation.

His solo exhibition, RICANSTRUCTIONS: Condiciones que Existen, is on view at Hutchinson Modern and Contemporary through November 4, 2022.

Jessamine Batario is an art historian, curator, and museum educator specializing in modern and contemporary art. Within this broad field, she is primarily concerned with issues of critical historiography, interrogating how histories are written in the first place. Batario’s current research and curatorial project features modern and contemporary art by artists with cultural heritage ties to Cuba, Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico — all islands occupied or colonized by the United States in 1898.  She is the Linde Family Foundation Curator of Academic Engagement at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine.

Register for Juan Sánchez in Conversation with Jessamine Batario to join the talk on October 20.
