Vancouver-based artist Nicolas Sassoon is one of the trailblazers in creating new media art out of the Internet’s favorite digital form: animated GIFs. Inspired by vintage 8-bit video game graphics, his colorful digital waves ebb and flow to their own hypnotic rhythms.
Exploiting the looping nature of the GIF format, the Canadian artist’s undulating patterns are given evocative but apt titles like Waterfalls, Sunset, and Blue Shore. The spaced-out motion graphics are made available as HD files, so you can fill up your entire screen. Depending on your perspective or changing moods, these moving patterns can either be soothing, entrancing or just migraine-inducing. It’s such an artful way to kill time.
