Less well-known but highly talented independent Japanese animators create short films in one-man operations

We are all aware of the success of Studio Ghibli’s films. They have become the benchmark of quality and passion when it comes Japanese animation. These films have garnered global fame and admiration. However, Miyazaki’s success may have cast a shadow on other independent animators that Japan has to offer.

Two independent animators worth taking a look at are Kihachiro Kawamoto and Koji Yamamura, who both create short films in one-man operations or using small teams for their processes.

Kawamoto draws inspiration from Japanese culture and tradition. He specializes in stop motion animation. On the other hand, Yamamura is an animator with a more hands-on background. He was trained in illustration and painting. His first works used cut-out techniques as well as hand-drawn animation.

Be sure to check out their work and support more of our independent artists from all around the world.
