Lesser known women “behind the scenes” celebrated in ‘Saving Washington’ exhibition

Saving Washington serves as the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Gallery inaugural exhibition. The show takes a deeper look at the well-known story of the Founding Fathers, but this time, it focuses on the less-popular roles of certain women who have played enormous parts in history.

These women pushed efforts behind the scenes, which ultimately led to the implementation and solidification of the Constitution. There were so many laws at the time that regulated and even restricted the participation of these women, elite or not – but they kept fighting for leadership, empowerment, and recognition.

Saving Washington highlights over 150 collection pieces, from books and documents to pieces of clothing and jewelry, all installed tastefully in the museum. The show aims to replicate the Wednesday night squeezes organized by First Lady Dolley Madison, which gathered fame during the time, as she tried to squeeze in social gatherings inside the mansion to promote an informal type of diplomacy.

Check it out at the New York Historical Society – Museum & Library. It will run from March 8 to July 30, 2017.
