Levitating concrete block to be exhibited at the Armory Show 2017

A concrete block will be floating above visitors at this year’s the Armory Show, happening in New York from March 2 to 5, yet the artists behind the exhibition refuse to label it magic. The reason? The installation, aptly titled “Drifter,” employs none of the deceitful tricks used in magic shows; instead, good ol’ — or new? — technology will make the levitation possible.

“Believe us, there’s a lot of technology” in the installation, Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, the founders of Dutch design team Studio Drift, the group behind the piece, told ARTnews. As in magic, however, the designers will not let viewers in on the secret behind the levitation.

“It’s straightforward, but of course, it’s not simple,” was as much technical information as they could offer.

Explaining the idea behind “Drifter,” Gordijn and Nauta said it’s a matter of how technology, concrete in particular, is so familiar and yet seems to be the opposite.

“Concrete was described as an idea of how we wish to build an ideal world,” the artists said. “Not even five hundred years later, it has nothing special—it has no particular identity.”
