This epic life-size working truck sculpture was made to highlight the dramatic rash of farmer suicides in India over the last decade. The 2010 peice titled ‘Transit’ took over 18-months to complete and consists of thousands of metal disks spot welded together. It is the work of Mumbai-based sculptor Valay Shende.
The physical complexity of the truck is impressive, but it also features monitors in its rear view mirrors. They show video footage of roadways in London, Mumbai, and Dubai from the perspective of the driver, bringing eerie life to this stationary truck. ‘Transit’ is currently on view at the Mumbai City Museum.
