What would be your perfect pet? While many people consider cats and dogs to be the ideal companions, Adelaide resident Jeff Cheng has a different dream pet in mind: Alfie, an adorable alpaca he and his wife, Sophie, adopted last year.

Cheng first saw Alfie while driving through a local suburb. Out on a walk with “an owner who seemed bored,” Alfie immediately caught Cheng’s eye. Later, after excitedly describing the encounter to Sophie, he looked up the logistics of keeping an alpaca as a pet—though his wife considered it nothing more than a funny fantasy.
“We laughed about the possibility of getting one,” she explains, “but also said, ‘there’s no way we’d actually get one’ and agreed on that sentiment. Little did I know that Jeff continued his research.”
At first, this “research” consisted primarily of Instagram searches. A few weeks later, however, it led Cheng to an alpaca farm, where he conducted some field research—and had a “yolo moment.”
When Sophie came home to find their family had a furry new addition, she understandably had mixed feelings. “I was so shocked that I didn’t really know what to say or what to think. I wasn’t angry at Jeff because he’s always taken full responsibility for all of our pets (I don’t have to do anything), but I was a little apprehensive.”
However, she immediately sensed a strong connection between her husband and Alfie—and soon developed her own bond with him, too. In order to chronicle this unusual relationship, they created an Instagram account for Alfie, where you can find warm and fuzzy photos and videos of the lovable little alpaca.
Whether he’s going for a stroll in his sunny suburban neighborhood, having fun frolicking at the beach, or simply hanging out at home, Alfie regularly steals hearts with his daily adventures, and Jeff and Sophie couldn’t be happier. “Truth be told, we have been totally shocked by the overwhelming love for Alfie online,” they explain. “We’re happy to make others smile.”
