Magical watercolors reveal lost connection between humans and nature

Indonesia-based artist Elicia Edijanto paints black and white watercolors in which children are facing their wild animal counterparts without fear, but with playfulness and curiosity. The artist avoids color and does not overcrowd her paintings with details to instill spiritual feelings of tranquility and melancholy.

Edijanto does an excellent job forcing viewers to acknowledge our long lost connection with wild animals and nature itself. The motif of the child facing wild animals without fear reminds us of the famous fictional character Mowgli, from Kipling’s “Jungle Book.” Edijanto’s artwork, similarly to Jungle Book stories, suggests that we can be friends with nature and its inhabitants.
