Man turns 1.2 acre field into a giant tribute to Van Gogh

Stan Herd has created a larger-than-life piece of art paying tribute to the 1889 Van Gogh piece “Olive Trees”. His earthwork is located in a field in Eagan, Minneapolis; and was commissioned by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts for their centennial anniversary.

The piece is entirely composed of rocks, plants and dirt. To begin the piece, Herd started by creating a grid pattern with the image he aimed to create, and then trimmed the pattern on the area. Then, he dug along the lines and planted new plants in specific areas.

In total, it took around a year to create. To se more of Herd’s work, check out his website.
