The graduate programs of Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) are pleased to announce the third annual January Colloquium, At the Table: Empathy, Community, and Collaboration, taking place January 3–7, 2024.
For five days every winter, students in MassArt’s Interdisciplinary Low Residency MFA program gather virtually via Zoom to engage in a colloquium and review. Each of these intensive winter experiences is organized around a central focus and features guest speakers and visiting artists. Topics are grounded in contemporary studio practice, art history, art theory, and expanded fields of study (audience, landscape, empathy, identity), and provide a lens for discussion. Most colloquium programming, including artist talks, panels, and keynote lectures, is free and open to the public.

The idea of sharing a meal is rich with questions and connotations. To come together around a table is to acknowledge life and mortality — we eat and engage because we anticipate the future, because we are aware of the necessity of community, and because we hunger to be together authentically. In balance, with any convening, it’s important to reflect on who is invited to the table. Who is excluded? What assumptions are we making? In this year’s colloquium, we posit that in order to create a more just and equitable community, empathy and curiosity need to uproot ego-based values.
As one means of examining the power of community, we look at examples of artists working with expanded/social practice. We’ve invited speakers who have integrated and even prioritized community work in their practice. The 2024 colloquium guests include Opening Speaker Sharon Louden, Keynote Speaker Jean Shin, and Lead Faculty, Critic, and Panel Moderator Loretta Park.

MassArt’s Interdisciplinary Low Residency MFA is one of several graduate degrees offered by the college, alongside full-residency Master of Fine Arts programs in Photography, Film+Video, and 2D+3D Fine Arts.
