Mercedes Says They're All-In on Going All-Electric

With the following three points, Mercedes is the latest car manufacturer to make some stunning claims of their commitment to electric powertrains:

– All newly launched architectures will be electric-only from 2025 onwards.

– In 2025 Mercedes-Benz will launch three electric-only architectures.

– Mercedes-Benz will be ready to go all electric at the end of the decade, where market conditions allow.

Additionally, by 2025 they’ll offer all-electric versions of every legacy vehicle they produce, before those internal-combustion variants eventually wink out of existence. “The tipping point is getting closer,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, “and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade.”

They’ve also laid out their plan of what those three architectures launching in 2025 will be:

– MB.EA will cover all medium to large size passenger cars, establishing a scalable modular system as the electric backbone for the future EV portfolio.

– AMG.EA will be a dedicated performance electric vehicle platform addressing technology and performance oriented Mercedes-AMG customers.

– VAN.EA ushers in a new era for purpose made electric vans and Light Commercial Vehicles, which will contribute to emission free transportation and cities in the future.

It’s not clear which of those three platforms would support an SUV form factor.

Then there’s this bananas claim: Their all-electric Vision EQXX concept, which is scheduled to be unveiled next year (teaser image above), will have a 1,000-km (621-mile) range. For comparison’s sake, about the best you could do in a Tesla with the Long Range option is 570km (360 miles).

So how is that possible? Short answer: Tons of money. “In total,” the company says, “investments into battery electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030 will amount to over €40 billion (USD $47.15 billion).”
