In an ongoing series of mesmerizing videos, Finnish factory owners and founders of Hydraulic Press Channel—Lauri and Anni Vuohensilta—creatively explore the capabilities of the hydraulic press. For their latest experiment, the duo has used the machine to see what happens when you squish and squash different soft materials, including a range of non-Newtonian fluids and—most memorably—a stack of colorful crayons.

Once placed in the machine, the crayons are squeezed by the press, which has been fitted with a special hole-covered plate. Acting as an extruder (a device that pushes matter through openings), the plate ejects the compressed crayons through the holes, transforming them into a rainbow spectacle of spaghetti-like projections.
In addition to crayons, the Vuohensiltas also use the machine to crush cheese, cans of shaving cream, several bars of soap, and more. In each case, the results are surprising—ranging from coiled “worms” to perfectly straight sticks.
