Miami showcased its artistic side in the last Art Wynwood 2017

If you think there are no more than Art Basel to give Miami any creative credits for, think again.

Cuban artists from around the city celebrated art during the recent Art Wynwood 2017 held Miami’s Avant Gallery. Nick Korniloff, founder, and organizer of the art event, founded the art festival last 2012 during the weekend of President’s Day. The one thing that makes this event stand out is its goal to focus on outdoor and street art. In a way, it is also a sort of homage for the Wynwood Walls, a street art gallery founded by the late real estate developer Tony Goldman and Jeffrey Deitch.

In Dmitry Put’s words, Avant Gallery’s owner, Art Wynwood is a “simmered down version of Miami.” It may not be crowded with international guests but notable people actually do come and appreciate Cuban street art. To name one of the highlights of the art fair is an array of hyperactive chimpanzee sculpture made by Chie Hitotsuyama. Made from wet strips of newspaper, the sculptures start at $9,000 and ranges up to $18,000 a piece.
