Mind boggling metal sculptures seem to melt before your eyes

Sculptor Kevin Francis Gray isn’t necessarily doing anything new. In fact, his form of sculpting has been around for centuries. That’s right folks, the Irish bronze and marble carver does it all by hand, a practice that is slowly dying out due to technical advancements and ADD.

And I did the research, sculpting by hand is arduous. Here’s how it usually goes: First, carve the thing. They start by sculpting their piece out of clay. Then the artist creates something called an armature, which is used like a metal skeleton to support the weight of their finished metal sculpture. Finally, a wax cast is made of the original clay figure, and from this, a metal finished piece is made. There’s more to it, and tons more for marble carvers, but as you can see, it’s tough.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

So maybe Gray isn’t doing anything new, but he is innovating, which in this realm is quite an achievement. Known for his figures seemingly draped in cloth with smooth undulating folds, they look like hot metal was poured over them only moments ago. His work is very persuasive and evocative. You can see his sculpture on display at Pace Gallery where he is represented.
