Co-directed by Baltimore-based animators Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata, Negative Space is a stop-motion animation short film based on a poem of the same name by Ron Koertge.
The film explores the relationship between a father and son through the ritualistic act of…packing. Both directors related to the message of the film instantly but Kuwahata was touched by it a little more. Speaking about his father who worked as an airline pilot, Kuwahata told Variety, ” I remember my dad adjusting his watch precisely before leaving the house and I remember the packing list that he pinned to the wall of his study. My most vivid childhood memories are connected with objects, textures, and ordinary routines.”

On the creative level, Kuwahata and Porter wanted the viewer to really feel the various textures of clothing and suitcases to add a sense of nostalgia normally associated with travel. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Animated Short Film.” Check out the making of the animated short by IKKI Films below!
