Neil Gaiman’s American Gods comes alive through Dave McKean’s dreamlike illustrations

Neil Gaiman is no stranger to television – at least his works are. His highly-acclaimed novels have been adapted for the screen once before and illustrated by some of the most talented artists in the world of graphic novels. Dave McKean, however, the artist behind Gaiman’s iconic Sandman series, have once again given life to one of the brilliant author’s works.

American Gods, a fictional wonder written about an ex-convict meeting an ancient god who goes by the name of Wednesday, will soon be shown on Starz as a TV series. In conjunction with this, The Folio Society is releasing 12 illustrations of the novel by McKean, including three double page spreads. Reminiscent of his concept with Gaiman’s film MirrorMask, McKean explores again the theme of duality in his recent work saying it is about the “uneasy relationship between the real and the unreal.”

The illustrations are available for $120 – a small price for McKean and Gaiman’s avid fans. The Folio Society, however, is giving away five copies to lucky book collectors which will all be signed by McKean. You can catch American Gods on Starz when it premieres on April 30.
