Neill Blomkamp Claps Back at God in New Short

A small film takes a big shot at the man upstairs in a new film from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s experimental production company Oats Studios simply entitled God. In the four-minute Volume 1 – Serengeti, a hairy white man (Sharlto Copley) oversees the development of humanity by doling out rain, snuffing out fire, and in general being a control freak. He orders his butler Geoffrey to perform the menial tasks of maintaining creation, peppered with exclamations like, “Bloody hell, that’s fire Geoffrey! I didn’t say he could do that. I give the fire!” and “Better shrink their brains again…”

Overall it’s not a good look for the First Mover, who’s holed up in a fancy schmancy library with Earth spread out like some sort of cosmic pool table. It’s not a stretch to assume that Blomkamp has a low opinion of whoever is running the show, based on his especially bleak brand of sci-fi in District 9, Chappie, and free Oats Studios shorts Rakka, Cooking with Bill, and Firebase. In God, disdain for the almighty isn’t implied. When the plague gets involved, it’s overt as hell.

Oats Studios is Blomkamp’s experiment with a fan-oriented “pay-what-you-can” business model. Each film is released on YouTube but can be bought on Steam by viewers who want more of the rich worlds these short films tease. “The main goal eventually, if it’s possible, is to raise enough money from the audience to make films independently,” Blomkamp tells Nerdist. “There are four films in [Oats Studios] Volume 1, and then there are other weird, smaller pieces that go between them. So if the audience online has seen four films by the time Volume 1 is done, and there are enough people who liked what they saw, one option is we make Volume 2 and charge for it so we can make Volume 3.”
