Neon embroidery atop photographs of iconic females explore empowerment

By applying successions of multicolored embroidery on vintage photos, Victoria Villasana achieves a fresh and whimsical aesthetic.

The Mexican artist uses photographs of artists, musicians, and politicians for her colorful recreations. The criss-crossing of bright, neon highlights add a layer of empowerment to feminist icons from Nina Simone to Frida Kahlo. When Villasana is not busy re-imagining icons in such beautiful ways, she’s taking to the streets with large murals. Check out more of her recent work on Instagram.
