Neuroscientific data used to create mind-blowing images of the brain

Two years ago, Dr. Greg Dunn took the initiative of mapping the neutrons in the brain as part of his artistic series, “Self Reflected.”

The artist and neuroscientist collaborated with Dr. Brian Edwards for the project, producing a technique that they call “reflective microetching,” in which the two artists track the neural goings-on in the human mind to create spectacular images complete with metallic luminescence.

Hand drawing, neuroscientific data, algorithmic simulation, photolithography, strategic lighting design, and 1,750 sheets of 22k gold leaf were some of the processes and items that they used. Dunn explains, “My work is neonaturalist, art based on natural forms and influenced by scientific advancements that allows us to perceive the universe beyond human senses.” Check out some of the resulting works below and grab fine art prints on Dunn’s website.
