Niko, a font family based on a humanistic design by Ludwig Übele.
Designed and published by Ludwig Übele in 2019, the Niko font family was originally made as a typeface for a daily newspaper. Editors working in the publishing industry may know that fonts used for newspapers and magazines have to face some interesting design challenges in terms of paper and printing conditions as well as the requirements in different text sections and sizes such as headlines, subheadings, main body text, and captions. By creating the Niko typeface, the German designer wanted to produce a font that appears reliable and friendly while solving all of these challenges. Hence, the typeface is characterized by a relatively large x-height, which is combined with open letterforms to emphasize the sense of horizontality, leading readers’ eyes along the line. Niko’s lively look is resulting from its wedge-shaped stem heads. The carefully crafted letters are based on a humanistic design, which makes it quite comfortable to read, even in long text sections.
