NYC exhibition showcases early American guitar designs

On display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is an exhibition that looks at the history of American guitar design, centering on early 19th century Martin guitars. Christian Frederick Martin, a German immigrant, was influenced by the instruments of his own culture as well as Spanish guitars from the Andalusia region.

The 35 guitar exhibition will showcase some of Martin’s earliest guitars including those where he used his famed X-braced construction. It will also showcase guitars from Austro-German and Spanish guitar makers, visually demonstrating the connection between Martin’s instruments and those that influenced him
