New York City may not be the first place you think of as a place to wind down and relax, but you might be surprised to learn that this bustling capital of the world has about 3.8 million square feet of dedicated resting areas. These privately owned public spaces (aka POPS) range from quiet parks to relaxing plazas, and they’re all designed to facilitate a break from congested city streets. However, these spaces aren’t usually sign-posted, making them difficult to find. In a bid to bring attention the city’s 550+ indoor and outdoor public resting zones, the NYC Department of City Planning is in search of a designer to create an official POPS logo.

In collaboration with Municipal Art Society, the logo design competition is open to anyone from around the world. Each entry will be considered by a 7-judge panel, as well as an online public vote. “We’re hoping for thousands of submissions,” Elizabeth Goldstein, president of the Municipal Art Society reveals. “These are badly needed open spaces in dense business districts. People need a place to take a breath, to cool their brains, for office workers to sit and eat their lunch.”

Designers of the three best logos will receive up to $2,000, while the creator of the final winning design will receive an additional $2,000. Not only is this a great cash prize, but the project also offers huge exposure for the chosen designer.
