When the firm landed their second religious architectural commission, BNKR Arquitectura was already fully equipped with the psychological and emotional knowledge that the structure requires. But the new chapel’s client was very specific regarding his requests which moved the design firm to comply in their own unique way.
On top of Mexico’s Acapulco Hills now stands the Sunset Chapel, a place of worship that is made with cast-in-place concrete, steel cables, and glass. It occupies a small building footprint, carving only a cave-like pathway to a staircase, and expands to accommodate the 360-degree adorned second floor which is elevated 5 meters from the ground. With its stone-colored, rough-looking facade, the whole building itself is an architectural mimicry of its boulder-sprinkled surroundings.

But the sanctity of the chapel was not lost in the process of making it environmentally intrinsic. Facing the sea on the second floor is an opening installed with cross-shaped translucent glass which allows direct light from the sunset to flood the chapel. This detail serves as both a unique church design and religious inspiration for the visitors.
