Old watch parts transformed into elaborate mechanical insects

Being the son of a gearhead and the grandson of a railroad man made Justin Gershenson-Gates who he is today – an inspiring Chicago-based artist, passionate about all things mechanical. In his sculpture series ‘A Mechanical Mind’ he used old watch parts and other found metal objects to create spine-chilling little creatures, such as flies, praying mantises and spiders.

Before becoming a thinker and assembler of his own beautiful mechanical world, Gershenson-Gates was a curious child, always taking toys and mechanical gears apart with little hope to put those parts back together. Perhaps this inability to make things as they used to be encouraged the creativity that allowed him to compose original jewelry and sculpture designs, reviving the old, broken, worn or rusty things for yet another life.
