Tina Fey, the 30 Rock writer and comedian who adapted Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes into the Mean Girls feature film, is celebrating the iconic day by auctioning a signed and annotated 70-page script of Mean Girls: The Musical that includes insightful handwritten notes and “quirky illustrations” in the margins. The hit Broadway production is scheduled to be released on January 12, 2024, as its own movie.
The one-of-a-kind annotated script gives readers a glimpse of Fey’s personal creative vision, featuring scenes not included in the original movie and specific line changes “depending on the actor performing and whether they look more like a Danny Devito or a Gary Coleman or an Olivia Newton-John,” according to the listing. It is expected to fetch up to £10,000 (~$12,000).
Fey is just one of dozens of theater playwrights and film screenwriters who have donated rare editions of their work for an online charity auction to support Good Chance, an international theater organization that provides support for refugee artists. In collaboration with Christie’s, the Out of the Margins auction features 55 listings for special editions of scripts spanning film and theater such as an original hardback copy of The Vagina Monologues (1998) and a key scene from Wicked (2003) annotated by Winnie Holzman and signed by Stephen Schwartz. The auction closes on October 6.
And in celebration of the day, fans of the cult classic film may be happy to hear that Paramount Pictures has made the entirety of Mean Girls available to watch for free — in 23 segments — on TikTok. The full movie can also be watched for free on YouTube with ads or streamed on Paramount+.
