Rebecca Szetois an artist living and working in San Francisco, California. Her works play with subtle shifts of perception and provide open-ended, visual prompts that encourage creative interaction and completion from the viewer.
Her work “Paintbrush Portraits” plays with notions of re-forming beauty and value. She uses humble, end-of-life, mass-produced materials inspired by her experience as a faux finisher. The paintbrush is self-referential, acting as both subject and object. It refers to the history of painting, through the medium of paint, with its own tool.

The slow and repetitive nature of whittling becomes a meditative activity in which she is able to reflect on the idiosyncrasies of each individual brush. Working intuitively, the layered surfaces of the paintbrushes become collaborators in defining their ultimate form and visual temperament while shedding light on the subtleties of the human condition.
