In his beautiful body of work, Polish photographer Rafał R. Nebelski captures the awe-inspiring beauty of polar regions. While his works range from snaps of sprawling landscapes to portraits of local wildlife, each one has the ability to convey silence—a feature that initially attracted Nebelski to the Arctic.
With their small populations and “beautiful emptiness,” these regions offer a perfect environment for Nebelski. In these idyllic locations, he can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and “regain balance, calm and space to plan the perfect frame.” As a result, he is able to produce photographs that channel this contemplative context.
Nebelski’s photography experience dates back to his childhood. Though he eventually shifted his attention to design to co-found the successful Foxrabbit studio, he recently re-discovered his passion for the craft during a life-changing trip to Europe’s northernmost tips. “It was a turning point for me,” he tells My Modern Met. “I knew that there is absolutely nothing that could diminish this atmosphere of austere beauty of the polar region.”
In addition to striking Arctic landscapes, Nebelski has also started to capture scenes of other locations around the world, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic and, of course, his home country of Poland. No matter where his travels take him, he sets out with one thing in mind: “the hope for finding silence.”
