Photographer Sends a Drone Over NYC to Prove the City is More Stunning From Above

A post shared by Humza Deas (@humzadeas) on Nov 13, 2017 at 12:08pm PST

New York City is a stunning metropolis no matter how a photographer captures it, but aerial photography offers a look at Manhattan that’s unlike anything else. Humza Deas is one photographer taking to the skies via a drone and snapping many striking shots of New York. His awe-inspiring vantage point highlights the beauty of city planning; how the grid system divides the buildings into neat geometric patterns and green areas like Central Park add bursts of color among the gray rooftops.

The drone over NYC is a stylistic departure for Deas. In 2014, as a self-taught 17-year-old, he climbed to terrifying heights to take pictures of his legs dangling over the streets far below. They were places he wasn’t supposed to be, but the images were thrilling—one even made it to the cover of New York Magazine that year, earning him the nickname “outlaw photographer.” Deas is taking fewer personal risks these days, but that’s not to say his work isn’t as compelling—his progression represents the different ways a born-and-bred New Yorker can explore his city and fall in love all over again.

If you’re interested in keeping a piece of Deas’s visual ode to New York for yourself, the photographer makes a selection of his work available as limited edition prints via his online shop.
