Photography’s early inventors linked their new medium to the microscope beginning in the 1840s. After wet collodion glass negatives were introduced in 1850, photomicrographic lantern slides astonished audiences with glimpses of tiny microbes projected at a monstrous scale. These images, associated with scientific validity through their mechanical production, were nonetheless subject to fanciful embellishment in advertisements.
