On the left you see the intact skin and face and on the right the swelling and bruises of battle. Nicolai Howalt photographed these young amateur boxers in Denmark before and after their very first fight.
The series titled ‘141 Boxers’ documents more than just the process, but represents a cultural transition into manhood. What is most striking is the baby-faced individuals that visually emerge with an understanding of self, aggression and accomplishment.
