Dog meets bone: the story of Dante’s Lunch couldn’t be more simple. With the attention to detail and vibrant 3D animation we’ve come to expect from Pixar, this short helps introduce a living, breathing world steeped in Mexican family culture with a flair for visual comedy that would make Chuck Jones proud.
As the titular dog, Dante, chases his befuddling animated prey, he crashes headfirst into trope after trope à la Looney Tunes. He falls off a roof, is coated in spikes after smashing through a cactus vendor, and even leaves a hole shaped like his silhouette after piercing a wooden fence. It’s simply classic, like Wile E. Coyote or Foghorn Leghound nemesis The Barnyard Dawg.

While Dante’s Lunch is entertaining, it doesn’t deliver the same feels as Pixar’s Oscar-winning Piper, which was released as a completely separate pre-movie short to 2016’s Finding Dory. But the clip, set in the upcoming film’s world, is a reminder that Pixar consistently nails it on stories big and small. Check it out below:
