Pollution data becomes wearable fashion

Using accessories such as necklaces and sunglasses, collaborators Stefanie Posavec and Miriam Quick developed a project to visualize the impact of the environment on our bodies.

The duo turned to the hard data to explore this topic. Using open air quality data from Sheffield, UK, a former steel-making city that is notorious for its poor air quality, the goal was to inspire public engagement around the issue of air pollution.

Since air particulate damages the heart and lungs, as series of three necklaces were constructed to represent this part of the body, each necklace representing a week’s worth of data. A triplicate of glasses were also developed to represent the loss to vision clarity that happens during occurrences of high air pollution.
