Pop Up: Light, Color, and Abstraction

Make art with us in the galleries! These exhibition-based workshops encourage creative inspiration for different activities, so make sure to check out the corresponding galleries. No prior art-making experience is necessary; our friendly staff will happily work with you on your creation. All ages are welcome!

Artists consider several things during their process of creating. Abstract artists, for example, often ponder space, color relations, and lines. These are aspects that encourage viewers to look closely. This month, we invite you to embark on a scavenger hunt. Visit the Modern Art Galleries and try to find Theo Van Doesburg’s Stained Glass Composition VIII. Once you’ve spotted Doesburg’s piece, join us as we create artworks that explore shapes, color, line, and light. Hint: look up!

These Pop Ups take place on three Fridays: October 13, 20, and 27.

About the instructor: Bianca Argueta (she/her) is a Salvadoran descendant artist who resides in Los Angeles, California. Argueta received her Painting and Drawing BFA degree from Cal State Long Beach. Her artistic practice investigates inner city life and intergenerational trauma caused by war and a dysfunctional home. In recent work, Argueta samples images from various sources, recollecting memories from childhood that coexist with cartoon characters. Her artistic influences include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jenny Saville, and Kerry James Marshall.
