Gianna Commito‘s paintings embody a structural familiarity that shines through the intense abstraction. By working in systems each painting takes on incredible depth originating in architectural forms.
In a similar fashion to how a building is constructed, Commito’s work begins with the micro: bricks and floor tiles. As these building elements get repeated and layered a larger structure emerges on the canvas. The end result of her process is a complex geometric playground of color. Her work manipulates space through illusion like a nonobjective version of MC Esher‘s ‘stairs’ paintings.
