Practicing Social Distancing Is Essential In These Times And These Illustrations Perfectly Illustrate Why

Despite the pleas of health officials and doctors, there are people out there who still don’t take social distancing seriously. Going on shopping sprees and taking their kids to their grandparents, some just don’t realize how hard the new virus is threatening us.

“Without surveillance, we don’t even know where to look,” Nathan Grubaugh, an epidemiologist at Yale University, told one news outlet. “We don’t even know where to employ self-isolation or social distancing. So now we’re stuck in this situation where it’s pretty much everywhere, and so we have to apply these methods across the board,” the epidemiologist said, talking about the United States.

For the sake of straightforwardness and easy information digestion, the author of the illustrations divides people up into 4 groups: A, B, C, and D. Group A is defined as the initial carriers of the virus—they are easily tracked and consequently quarantined. However, people from group A have had direct contact with group C, which makes the latter also easy to find and thus quarantine. Because they have been tracked easily, medics can now properly observe and care for the people of group C.

According to the illustrations, then, group A passes by strangers from group B, who have indirect contact with the virus. “The problem is that we can’t track group B and they don’t know they’ve infected themselves.” Therefore, group D should stay home due to the high chance of becoming infected by group B.

“The goal of social distancing and self-quarantine,” the presentation explains, “is to help identify group B and limit the growth of group B2.” This way, in the following two weeks that it may take the virus to incubate, some from group B will show symptoms and thus will be properly treated. Therefore, to help identify group B, stop the spread of the assumed group B2, and all in all, slow down the spread of coronavirus, it is crucial that we apply social distancing. That means strict self-isolation with as few contacts as possible.

This week, an assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University College of Population Health in Philadelphia told the media: “We’re in the middle of a war here. Not everyone in the war is on the front lines, like our doctors and nurses and other health professionals, but many of us have a role to play. Maybe some of us should be planting victory gardens and collecting aluminum to fight the battle, and we do that through the actions we take.” And the action to take this time is probably the easiest ever—just stay at home.
