Alzheimer’s is considered as one of the leading causes of death in old people in the United States alone. And for Pratt Institute professor and architect Alex Schweder, the topic hit close to home. After caring for her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother, he realized that “as a designer, my expertise will not find a cure but can multiply moments of joy, preserve dignity, and ease caregiving for those managing the disease.”
That is why, under his supervision, industrial design students from Pratt Institute collaborated to create furniture and equipment that can make Alzheimer’s patients handle everyday life more interactively. They interview the staff of CaringKind, a non-profit organization for Alzheimer’s disease, to get feedback from the patients as well as the family and carers.

“Design for the Mind” became the result and has been displayed at this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in Manhattan.
