Previews: Nicoletta Ceccoli & Yuka Sakuma – “Hide and Seek” & “Miniature Garden” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On Angust 19th, along with a showing from Brandi MilneCorey Helford Gallery will also be presenting solos from Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) & Yuka Sakuma.

Entitled Hide and Seek, the new acrylic and colored pencil works on paper (pictured first) from the San Marino, Italy-based Ceccoli features her children disguising themselves or in the act of hiding. Her characters appear innocent on the surface, but when you look more into the details of her surreal compositions you will notice more menacing and frightful themes running in the background.

Sakuma, on the other hand, has contributed a new series of ink paintings entitled Miniature Garden which feature “young girls in a state of transformation and development, physically and emotionally.” The Japanese artist has surrounded her characters with flowers – tulips, pansies, water lilies and cherry blossoms – perhaps a reference to their state of mind.
