Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair Is Back

We’re thrilled to be returning to Los Angeles to present Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair (LAABF) — our first time back since 2019! Along with the annual NY Art Book Fair, this event is a leading international gathering for the distribution of artists’ books, celebrating the full breadth of the art publishing community.

Taking place at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles from August 10 to 13, LAABF 2023 features 300+ international publishers, new initiatives forefronting artists’ books from Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region (including many publishers traveling to LA for the first time), collaborations with ICA LA and Hauser & Wirth Publishers, and a schedule of programs focusing on LA-based artists and community-driven projects.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

Fair programming includes The Classroom, a space for artists, writers, designers, and publishers to spotlight new releases and discuss important themes in artists’ book publishing. Star Feliz, Harmony Holiday, La Pocha Nostra, Anuradha Vikram, and John C. Welchman are participating in this year’s Classroom, which was organized in collaboration with David Senior, Director of Library & Archives at SFMOMA. Also at LAABF 2023 are new editions by Carolina Caycedo, Arthur Jafa, Alake Shilling, and Sonya Sombreuil; with Caycedo additionally showing a new mural that aims to reimagine the current global energy model. Select exhibitors will present special activations, including an expansive installation-as-publication by artist and publisher Yusuf Hassan and Kwamé Sorrell, the co-publisher of BlackMass. The Friendly Fire section brings together social justice organizations and politically-minded artist publishers such as Press Press, Gato Negro Ediciones, Arts of the Working Class, and the Feminist Center for Creative Work, among others.

Opening Night is Thursday, August 10, 6–9pm (PT). Fair hours are Friday, August 11, 1–7pm; Saturday, August 12, 11am–7pm; and Sunday, August 13, 11am–6pm.
