Professional Wedding Photographer Compares The iPhone 11 Pro To The Canon 5D Mark IV

The iPhone 11 Pro, with its triple rear cameras, night mode, and new selfie camera is surely meant to be Apple’s photography counter to Android’s three-camera flagships, the Huawei P30 Pro, Google Pixel 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10. But just how good is it? Professional wedding photographers of 7 years Jamie and Lauren Eichar wanted to find out. They took the new device alongside their trusty Canon 5D Mark IV for an engagement shoot with their friends, and then posted the results side-by-side for people to compare.

“Ever since portrait mode on the iPhone has been a thing, we’ve been using our phones for fun on engagement shoots and wedding days for some quick portraits that we can send at the end of the day,” Jamie told PetaPixel. “With the new iPhone’s focus on the camera improvements and Apple adding the ‘Pro’ label to this phone, we thought it was the perfect time to see if this could actually replace our DSLR in some instances.”

The before-mentioned features aside, Apple also added a Snapchat-style “hold the shutter button down” to record a video function, and changed the font inside the camera app to one aptly enough called SF Camera which you’ll notice on the control dials and mode names. Also, the camera app Viewfinder lets you see what’s outside your frame (using the ultrawide lens).

After everything was said and done, Jamie thought the iPhone did an excellent job. “If you guys are in the market for a new phone, like, highly highly recommend the iPhone 11 Pro for being the best camera in any smartphone we’ve ever used,” he said. “You’ll be able to get images similar to what we got on our engagement shoot and so much more. Landscape images are gonna be more detailed, it’s gonna have better low-light performance for that new night shot mode. But for our purposes, this is a really fun way to mess around with an iPhone and compare it to our DSLR.”
