Quarantine Through Glass by Caroline White

Caroline White’s latest photo series captures the experiences of creatives in their homes in East LA during this COVID-19 crisis.

Caroline White is a Los Angeles-based portrait photographer whose new series captures the experiences of creatives in their homes in East LA during this COVID-19 crisis. Caroline often photographs her subjects through windows. She is therefore well equipped to handle the unique technical challenges of photographing through glass from a distance. She brings step stools, light blockers with stands, occasionally lights, extension cords, and has even used a drone a couple of times for daytime second story shoots.

Caroline White has photographed several notable public figures, including Kai Ryssdal, host of NPR’s daily radio broadcast Marketplace. Having initially studied acting at NYU’s Tisch School of Arts and then switching to photography she decided to follow into the footsteps of her great aunt Margaret Bourke-White, the first American female war photojournalist, whose photo of Fort Peck Dam’s construction during the Great Depression featured on the first cover of Life Magazine.

Below you can find some photographs of Caroline’s ‘Quarantine Through Glass’ series along with brief statements from each of the subjects describing their quarantine experience. Danielle Marcelle Bond said: “Usually at 3 pm, I’d be in the gym or at rehearsal. I’d be wearing gym clothes if I was the gym and depending on the show I’m rehearsing for…sometimes gym clothes, sometimes full period costumes. I once had to wear Venetian flood shoes in a show and rehearsed in them for weeks. This is much more comfortable!”

Colter Freeman said: “I would probably be doing the same thing around this time, I think it was dinner time, so probably cooking or walking the dog. Listening to a podcast about a murder or Genghis Khan. As the typical LA filmmaker/writer I pretty much always dress like the world has ended, jeans and a semi-clean t-shirt. I’ve had to postpone a new short film, work is absolutely frozen, and I missed out on trips to Japan, Korea, and Mexico, and numerous birthday parties.”

Dexter Randazoo said: “The day you shot me DJing – I was supposed to be in San Francisco that week doing screenings so would have been coming home, on an airplane, probably wearing a similar outfit. Home attire is travel attire.”

George Whyne Cranford said: “Before the pandemic, I probably would’ve been doing pre-production for a short film I wrote, hustling for carpentry work, and getting ready for another spontaneous trip around the globe. And in between: brunches, coffee dates, hiking, and live music. Now I work from home way more, I’m trying to learn day trading, I’m still writing and I have a new roommate. I cook a lot, and I’ve perfected my Shakshuka recipe.”

Jane Choi said: “So around sunset, I would most likely be doing something active – walking outside or going to a yoga or fitness class. I like working out/finishing a workout around that time because it helps regulate my circadian rhythm.”

Jeremy Rosenberg said: “Caroline photographed me in my sunroom on a late Wednesday afternoon. I go up there sometimes to sit and read and to watch people go by at a safe distance outside, as well as to make noise at 8’oclock for all the healthcare workers. I’ve also been doing things I don’t usually do, such as washing my laundry by hand instead of going to the laundromat.”

Kate Marshall said: “Caroline came to shoot my fiancee and me through our window. We decided to convey the sense of love, intimacy, and joy we felt at being stuck at home together. I was partially nude and we danced in the window with the glowing light. Caroline captured the moments and essence of our emotions so beautifully. I’m going to get one of the photos framed for the house. I live an adventurous, social life, and normally I would be hosting gatherings with lots of friends, traveling for shoots (we are documentary filmmakers), and meeting with people in person about projects and editing. I’ve missed my amazing LA community, going out to eat, and experiencing art and culture around the city. I would probably be wearing clothes for such occasions!”

Natalie Venturi said: “At this time, I would be driving home on the I-5 (sitting-in-the-I-5-parking-lot is more like it) from my corporate consulting gig – listening to my favorite podcasts: The Archers or Here’s The Thing. I would be wearing similar clothes…black, and more black. Plus hoop earrings and my favorite Michele watch.”

Nick said: “Usually at this time I’d be getting dressed to go for my swim practice if I wasn’t on lockdown. I’d have driven over to jump into the West Hollywood pool in my bright colored speedo. Instead, Caroline photographed me as I was getting dressed for my indoor workout. A bunch of us swimmers work out together online and then post our workouts on Instagram.”
