Real Mecha: A Four-Legged People Mover from Japan

Sansei Technologies manufactures amusement park rides for Disney and Universal, as well as independent Japanese resorts. At the Tokyo Mobility Show, the company displayed their newly-developed SR-02, a prototype for a four-legged people mover:

The electric-powered vehicle measures 3.6m in length, 2.0m in width and 2.1m in height (roughly 12′ x 6.5′ x 7′) and can seat four. It can be operated by either an on-board pilot or remotely.

Hidetaka Tenjin, a mechanical designer for the anime and videogame industries, was commissioned to produce this rendering of potential applications for the SR-02:

That the prototype was green-lit at all is a testament to both Japan’s peculiarity and Sansei Technologies’ client base. The SR-02 seems impractical and cannot have been cheap to produce, but these things can be outweighed by the country’s love of anime and mecha. And because Sansei is in the business of amusement, they can invest in longshots like this in the hopes that clients will simply find it cool.

The SR-02 was not designed for a specific client; Sansei Technologies’ plan is to refine the design and rent SR-02 units to trade shows, events and amusement parks.
