We’ve seen how the US government was able to appeal to the patriotism of the citizenry to convince them to grow victory gardens during WWII. They made the same appeal nationwide for the recycle of scrap metal, and it was every bit as successful as the appeal for the victory gardens. This was an activity that even young children could help with, and boy, did they ever.

Flashbak offers a series of photographs taken in Boston circa 1942 that chronicles the collective efforts of its citizens in collecting and recycling scrap metal. Young, old, and in-between, male and female (there were only two genders in those days), these citizens gave it their all, and no unguarded metal object was safe, including those found in cemeteries.
