Redemption at Last: Yael Bartana’s Solo Exhibition Opens at the Jewish Museum Berlin

For more than 20 years, Yael Bartana has inquired into grand historical narratives that serve to constitute national and other collective identities. Her artistic strategies include participant observation and redesigning public rituals.

Her solo exhibition at the Jewish Museum Berlin, Redemption Now, investigates the power of imagination and art’s redemptive potential. It brings together more than 50 artworks, including video installations, photographs, and neon works. At the core of the show is the commissioned video work “Malka Germania” (Hebrew for “Queen Germania”), which Bartana conceived for the Jewish Museum Berlin and produced at historically charged locations across Berlin. At its base, the work questions expectations of political salvation while contemplating desires for social change and collective redemption. The world seems upside down, and many people are looking for something to hold onto. In an era of disillusionment, when fears are being stoked and extreme ideologies revived, Bartana creates alternative realities in her art, inviting the viewers to consider new vantage points. Redemption Now is on view through October 10, 2021.
